With high-quality steel and intricate detail, our odachi samurai swords are made in the traditional Japanese style. The odachi sword, also known as a nodachi, is a great long sword that was said to have been used by the Gods of Japanese mythology. It was carried by foot soldiers on the back or by hand, the latter being more practical to easily draw it in battle. This differs from other samurai swords, such as the wakizashi that was worn on the left side, secured to the waist sash. Whether you want to take an odachi into battle or display it proudly in your home, our swords are handcrafted with the best materials for a fully functional sword that can be sharpened to your desired edge. It is an excellent choice for dojo and iaido use and durable enough for tameshigiri, bamboo, and iron wire.
Nodachi literally translates to "Field Sword", while Odachi means "Large / Great Sword". The question is, is there an actual difference between the Nodachi and the Odachi? The simple answer is no. Historical documents show that Japanese of the time used the two terms interchangeably. You could say that when referring to a sword as Nodachi, you are specifying the application of the sword (to be used in the battlefield), whereas with Odachi you are talking about the size of the weapon (as a greatsword). At the end of the day, as opposed to many misconceptions about this fact, they are the same weapon
