Odachi/Nodachi Swords

Odachi/Nodachi Swords

With high-quality steel and intricate detail, our odachi samurai swords are made in the traditional Japanese style. The odachi, also known as a nodachi, is a great long sword that was said to have been used by the gods of Japanese mythology. It was carried by foot soldiers on their backs or by hand — the latter being more practical to easily draw it in battle.

The nodachi sword differs from other samurai swords, such as the wakizashi, due to it’s carrying style. Wakizashi swords were worn on the left side and secured to the waist sash instead of attached to soldiers’ back. Our nodachi swords for sale at Swords of Northshire are 100% real, full tang swords that can be used for dojo and iaido practice forms, as well as for display purposes in your collection.

Nodachi vs. Odachi?

The main difference between the two names is that nodachi literally translates to "Field Sword" while odachi means "Large / Great Sword." The question here is, do these two swords have appreciable differences? The short answer to this question is no. Primary sources reveal that the Japanese used the two terms interchangeably. There is some evidence that using the term for nodachi sword referred to the application of the sword on the battlefield, whereas with odachi swords, you are specifying the size of the weapon as a greatsword. At the end of the day, both terms refer to the same weapon.
