The single-edged Dao sword became the favored weapon during the Tang Dynasty after Chinese and Korean sword smiths emigrated to Japan. Their metallurgical skills were in highly sought after, and the Japanese adopted some of their sword making techniques, like folded steel and using clay for differential hardening. Once the Japanese perfected the sword making techniques and skills, many of the Japanese blades became treasured swords of the Chinese Song Dynasty nobles.
Each Tang Dao is forged by our master smith in Longquan, a region that was central to sword production in the Song Dynasty. The blade is made of 1095 high carbon steel, clay tempred with a mirror-like finish. Our steel blades have been designed from the ground up, to offer perfect balance for regular Iaido & Kenjutsu use. The sword comes equipped with a black lacquered hardwood saya with partial rayskin wrap, silk sageo/ito, premium copper fittings, genuine same' (rayskin) and silk wrapped tsuka (handle). The Tang Dao is well assembled and the ito wrapping is tight and even. Each sword is individually handmade so specifications may vary slightly from sword to sword.
