This is a well-made folded steel Shirasaya, following the traditional Japanese process. The blade is very sharp and folded 13 times resulting in 8,192 layers. The visible grain pattern on the blade comes from folding the blade repeatedly during forging. The blade is then heat-treated, tempered, and oil quenched to achieve optimal levels of flexibility and hardness. Finally, the blade is hand polished with multiple grades of sharpening stones which makes the surface of the blade reflective like a mirror. It comes with a natural huali wood saya with matching handle. The full tang is secured into the handle with two buffalo horn mekugi pegs. It is a very good choice for Dojo students, gifts, cutting practice, and display. The sword is strong enough to cut through bamboo yet sharp enough to slice paper. Each sword is individually handmade so specifications vary slightly from sword to sword.

FAQ

We pride ourselves on our top-notch customer service. We’re in direct contact with you regarding your order from start to finish. We also send pictures of the finished sword for your approval (and excitement!) before shipping. Other companies may accept orders and rush to fulfill them as soon as possible, whereas all of our swords are hand-forged and made to order by master smiths using the time-honored traditional Japanese & Chinese techniques. These swords are not fashioned on an assembly line; each is crafted with the care & respect the heritage deserves.

We refer to Japanese Quality to emphasize the difference from swords that are Made in China and of low quality & mass produced. All of our swords are fully handmade-to-order in the traditional way they have been forged for many generations. Many Longquan swordsmiths received their knowledge directly from Japanese forges; there is a rich history of information sharing between the two cultures. In these modern times, a Japanese Katana and a Longquan Katana are functionally the same.

Forever guarantee: We stand behind the quality of our swords. After your sword is created at the forge, we will send you pictures and will only ship after your approval. If at any time you have issues with the craftsmanship of your sword, please reach out to us and we will do our best to make things right.

Unless indicated otherwise, every sword is hand-forged and made-to-order for a high-quality & unique product created for you. This intricate process takes 3-4 weeks to complete. We’ll send pictures of your sword by email for confirmation (please whitelist sales@swordsofnorthshire.com to make sure you get our email). Tanto and wakizashi swords usually take around 4 weeks. Highly customized swords such as blades of a custom length or custom painted scabbards will typically take 4-5 weeks. For most orders, we estimate 4-6 weeks from the time the order is submitted to when you receive it. If you need a sword by a specific date or within a shorter time frame, contact us and we can see about prioritizing your order.

We ship to anywhere in the United States for free! For all other countries, we offer a flat shipping rate of $19.

Customers are responsible for customs taxes & duties.

Customer Reviews

Overall rating: 4.1 / 5 from 8 reviews.

Unfortunately, it took much longer than expected to come to me. I ordered it in mid May I believe. July 20th i was notified that it was finished however I did not receive my sword until August 24th. Once I got it I was very happy to finally have it. One thing I noticed which was not clear in the photos was that the pins in the handle stick out a bit more than expected. Also I had the understanding that the sword would be coming to me sharp. Not really sure what happened with that. Over all I'm pretty satisfied with the Nijato itself. It feels good in my hands and I love the weight and balance of it. However my overall experience with your company i found wanting. Sorry I couldn't be more positive about it. This is just how this transaction left me feeling. I can't honestly say that I would likely use your services again for my next purchase which would have been a Katana.

Nice blade. Fit and finish on scabbard and handle are poor. Blade no longer fits in scabbard, wood on handle and scabbard are separating at the seam and splitting. I would not suggest this sword. Other items may be nice, this is not.

Hand Forged Folded Damascus Steel Straight Blade Huali Wood Shirasaya Samurai Ninja Sword I`m Trainer for Ninjutsu in Switzerland and we are searching for Katanas or Shirasaya in a great Quality! The Quality of this Product is great but is a bit heavy. The blade should be a bit lighter than it would be perfect! I will try to do Tameshigiri and will report you how my cutting experience was! I will recommend this Shirasaya to my students! Best Regards Michel

Hand Forged Folded Damascus Steel Straight Blade Huali Wood Shirasaya Samurai Ninja Sword

Hand Forged Folded Damascus Steel Straight Blade Huali Wood Shirasaya Samurai Ninja Sword I ordered a shirasaya, folded damascus blade and huali wood sheath. The sword looks amazing, both the sheath and the blade, also the decoration close to the handle. Pulling the sword out of the sheath require a certain amount of strength, meaning that it's almost a stock inside it and it needs a good pull to be drawn. I asked the name of the swordsmith on the blade, but there isn't, maybe is covered under the handle. It looks pretty good, but some details of the sheath could be better. Overall I think it's an amazing sword for $240.

Hand Forged Folded Damascus Steel Straight Blade Huali Wood Shirasaya Samurai Ninja Sword

Hand Forged Folded Damascus Steel Straight Blade Huali Wood Shirasaya Samurai Ninja Sword I made a wooden katana for a history project in school, and I wanted to find a high-quality, cost-effective sword that was aesthetically simple and similar to the one I made. A friend recommended Swords of Northshire, and I found this shirasaya on the website. The sword was packaged very securely for international shipping to the US (I can even use the same packaging if I ever need to transport it long distance again). They also sought customer feedback and kept us informed every step of the way, from making the sword to shipping it (customer service is excellent). The finished product is beautiful (both the wood and blade) and well-cared for. The blade came oiled and encased in a plastic wrap to protect the blade from moisture and the saya from oil. I am extremely satisfied with the product and would recommend the company to other friends looking for a reputable company that sells high-quality swords for a good price.

Hand Forged Folded Damascus Steel Straight Blade Huali Wood Shirasaya Samurai Ninja Sword

Hand Forged Folded Damascus Steel Straight Blade Huali Wood Shirasaya Samurai Ninja Sword Pretty solid shirasaya. The blade is a high quality craft and the over all sword is well constructed, but after a couple of re-sheathings, the blade doesn't stay tight in the sheath and wobbles out easily. It was also not as sharp as I was hoping for, but I'd assume for $240 it's a good edge... It has JUST enough edge to cut through smaller bamboo. Over all it was a good purchase.
