This sword is made of 1095 high carbon steel, clay tempered with a polished mirror-like surface. It is a very strong sword made with traditional methods. The blade is repeatedly heat treated and hand forged to remove impurities. The clay temper process combines the characters of toughness and flexibility and results in a genuine hamon (temper line). After sharpening, the blade is etched with an oxidation process to give the surface it's red color. The blade is full tang and hand sharpened, suitable for battle. The sword comes with a high quality ribbed hard wood saya, silk sageo/ito, genuine same' (rayskin) and iron fittings. It is a very good choice for dojo and iaido use, gifts, cutting practice, display, and collection. It is durable enough for tameshigiri, bamboo, bones, iron wire, etc.

---UPDATE AT BOTTOM--- Here's my personal review of this sword, the accessories I purchased with it and my experience with the customer service here at Swords of Northshire. It's important to understand that when getting a sword so heavily customized, there's always a chance that there's a small chance that mistakes will be made along the way. I'm one of the customers that experienced those mistakes, but all is well that ends well. The quality of the blade itself was rather good, the engraving was nice, the handle was very thick, but I appreciate this because of how excellently balanced the blade feels. When swung even the slightest bit, oh, does she ever sing... She feels nice in the hand, handles like a dream and has cutting power like any respectable blade should. There was a communication error and a part of my requested engraving was cut off (it was a very long phrase) and engraved on the other side of the blade, and the representative seemed to understand this before I said anything and offered to make me a new blade, at no further cost to me. The new blade turned out to be much darker, but as I was simply excited to receive my new blade I gave them the go-ahead to mail it to me anyway. Despite settling for the darker steel, her aesthetic is truly one-of-a-kind in my town and I'm quite pleased with her. The sword bag that came with the blade itself was very nice, visually appealing and looks to be made of silk, despite feeling like some sort of polyester to the touch. However, I'm a little disappointed with the accessories I've purchased alongside her. The sword bag with the backstrap was unusable, as the backstrap was less than half the length necessary for me to be able to wear it (fully extended), and one of the women in my life (in pretty decent shape) could just barely wear it herself. The quality of the backstrap itself felt cheap, and frankly I'd rather just make my own strap for this thing. The sword maintenance kit is satisfactory, although you might want to pick up some rice paper of your own. The mekugi mallet, spare mekugi, uchinko ball and powder are up to my satisfaction. At the end of the day, the quality of the sword itself I'd rate 10/10. If I had the patience, I could have gotten a blade that was a much brighter red, like I was originally hoping for, but I'd advise you specify if you want a brighter or darker steel when you order, just in case. ----UPDATE---- I haven't owned it for a month yet and the colored film on the outside of the blade is wearing away. It hasn't been put through any abuse and this blade is starting to look ugly. Don't buy it for the color, it won't last.
