This is an accurate and fully functional reproduction of a WW2 Gunto Japanese Officer Sword made through traditional Japanese forging methods. Towards the end of the samurai era in Japan (1860s), the government started conscripting people to join their military. The shin gunto sword was a standard piece of equipment issued to all conscripts.
The Type 98 was a later model of the gunto sword that was disseminated in 1938. The most notable difference between this type and older models is that the second hanging point was removed from the scabbard. Due to metal shortages in Japan, these swords also had wooden scabbards and no ornamentation.
