This nodachi/odachi sword was inspired by Sasaki’s infamous Monohoshizao sword, meaning drying pole, clothes rod, or washing pole sword. The name comes from the incredible length of the sword and its resemblance to the bamboo rods that were used in ancient Japan to dry clothes after washing.
Born in 1585, Sasaki Kojirō used this style of sword throughout his life. He was a well-known Japanese swordsman most famous for his battle with Miyamoto Musashi which ended with Kojirō’s death in 1612.
