Tanto Swords

The tanto has a long history in Japan, dating back to the Heian period (794 - 1185). During this time, it was primarily used as a personal defense weapon by the nobility and top samurai class. In the subsequent Kamakura period (1185 -1333), this type of weapon became more widely used, as it was adopted by the warrior class as a secondary weapon.

Tanto swords were traditionally made using the same techniques used to make traditional Japanese swords. They were often forged using a specific Japanese swordsmithing process, in which multiple layers of steel were pounded together to create a strong, durable blade. The edges of the weapons were then sharpened, carefully honed, and polished to a razor-sharp edge.

What makes it a unique weapon?

  • Blade thickness: Tanto blades are generally thicker and stronger than traditional Japanese swords, with a cross-section that is often triangular or diamond-shaped. This gives the blade additional strength and rigidity, which allows it to be used for more heavy-duty fighting tasks such as piercing armor or hard materials.
  • Blade shape: Tanto blades are characterized by their long, narrow points and straight edges. The point is designed to be able to penetrate deeply, while the straight edge allows for efficient cutting.
  • Blade material: As mentioned above, their blades were traditionally made using a Japanese swordsmithing process, in which multiple layers of steel were pounded together to create a strong, durable blade. Modern Japanese tanto swords may be made from a variety of materials, including stainless steel, high-carbon steel, or other alloys.
  • Handle material: These swords typically have handles made from materials such as wood, bone, or plastic. The handle may also be wrapped in a cord or other materials for additional grip.
  • Sheath: These swords are often carried in a sheath, or saya, which is a protective cover for the blade. The sheath may be made from materials such as wood, leather, or plastic, and is typically worn at the waist or on the back.
