This hand forged katana is made from a unique metal called tamahagane. This is an iron sand and charcoal combination that must be smelted in a tatara furnace and folded using the traditional Japanee forging method to remove impurities and fuse the iron and carbon. The high carbon content is used to make the cutting edge and core of the blade while the low carbon pieces encase the core for added durability.
This tamahagane hand forged katana has a natural hamon line due to the clay tempering that occurs during forging. Our master smiths then use both hazuya and jizuya stones to polish the blade and accentuate the hamon line and grain pattern. The polishing process alone for the blade can take between 25 and 30 days. We highly recommend this custom tamahagane katana for serious collectors.
