The swordsmith paints a clay mixture onto the rough, shaped blade — carefully applying different thicknesses of clay to both the spine and cutting edge. Next, the swordsmith adds personal markings onto the blade with a thin metal tool. The marks can only be seen when a sword polisher reveals them. They are the soul of the sword, and form a unique natural temper line known as hamon.

Through rapid heating and quenching, the spine and cutting edge cool at different rates because of the clay coating, resulting in a cutting edge that is extremely hard and a spine that is durable and flexible.
