Your sword's exact crafting methods will depend on your selections though you can expect the utmost attention to detail paid to every aspect of its creation.

Being my first order, and not knowing what to expect, I was overjoyed to receive it way earlier than expected. The custom details exceeded every expectation I had. I have wanted a Katana that says "me" all over it. The stores that sell Samurai regalia seem to cater more to the decorative eye than functional. I will be collecting more from this site in the future. Thank you for your time and attention to detail!

I was looking at getting my wife a Katana for Christmas and all of the reviews online said Swords of Northshire was the place to go. I wasn't disappointed, the customer service was outstanding (Bryce Ronquille) and the level of detail available was amazing. The sword came excellently packed and in very short amount of time. Bryce kept us informed of the progress along the way and provided pictures before shipping of the final product, which was nothing less than a work of art. The workmanship in the sword was amazing, extremely well built and detailed. I cannot wait to add more of these to my collection.

I'm very pleased with my custom katana. The blade is smooth and the polish shows the folding and hamon exceptionally well. It's lighter than what I'm used to. I own a number of Cheness and Hanwei blades and this one is by far the most maneuverable and well balanced. It slices through small dowels, PVC pipe and bamboo like through butter. After some 20 hours of use it shows no significant scratches and is as sharp as new. The fittings are all tight and the ito has not moved an inch, which is a common problem with many of my other swords. The habaki is nicely fitted to the blade as opposed to the blade being filed to fit. The saya is a little loose which sometimes causes the blade to cut into the wood while re-sheathing but this is a common problem with many katana and easily solved with proper technique. Although I've not measured, it seems like the Sakihaba and Monouchi is a little thicker than the rest of the blade which makes it nice for cutting. The customer service was exceptional and delivery was fast. I will certainly recommend these blades to others.

The blade is the most important part of a sword. Its quality depends on the steel material and forging method.

We pick out good materials for making blades, especially for our premium swords. Customers can opt for specific materials according to your needs.

Blade Material Glossary:
*

NAGASA (Blade Length) :

nagasa

The Japanese blades we offer are in a variety of lengths. The nagasa is measured from tip of the kissaki to hamachi (edge notch).

You may also specify your own custom blade length and handle length here. If the handle length is not specified, we will balance the weight with the blade. Custom blade length increases craft time by approx. 2 weeks since we have to make a new tsuka, saya, and blade

The default handle lengths are 10.6" (26.9cm) for Katana, 8.1" (20.6cm) for Wakizashi, and 7.7" (19.6cm) for Tanto.

*

BO-HI (Groove):

Bo-Hi

A groove in the blade, commonly called a "blood groove." The bo-hi groove is added to lighten the blade.

Furthermore the grooves (always done on both sides of the blade) make a whistling sound when the sword is swung.

*

HAMON (Temper Line):

Hamon

Hamon is the temper pattern along the blade edge. We offers 3 kinds of hamon styles. Clay Tempered blades will produce a natural hamon

*

SAYA (Scabbard):

Saya

Saya is the Japanese term for a scabbard, and specifically refers to the scabbard for a sword or knife.

Saya are normally manufactured from very lightweight wood, with a coat of lacquer on the exterior. The wood is light enough that care must be taken when drawing the sword.

*

SAGEO (Saya Cord):

Sageo

The Sageo cord is used to secure a katana to the Obi (Belt).

Sageo in this series are made of silk.

*

Fuchi

Fuchi and kashira are ornamental fittings which are attached to the handles of Japanese swords. The fuchi fits over the end of the handle, and the kashira fits over the opposite end.

There are a variety of fuchi & kashira to choose. They are made from alloy, copper, and iron. The sets will be periodically renewed to provide the widest possible ranges of options.
